Can I Install Stone Veneer Over Brick?

If you're thinking about giving your brick wall a makeover, stone veneer might be the perfect solution. Whether you're going for a rustic, modern, or traditional look, stone veneer can instantly update the style of your home, without tearing out your existing brick. But the big question is: can you install manufactured stone veneer directly over brick? The answer is yes, with the right preparation.

Why cover brick with stone veneer?

Brick is a durable material, but over time, it can look outdated or mismatched with modern aesthetics. Manufactured stone veneer offers a cost-effective way to refresh the look of fireplaces, feature walls, exterior facades, or even basement walls, without the weight or expense of natural stone.

What you need to know before you begin

Before jumping into installation, consider these key points:

1. Check the condition of the brick: make sure the brick wall is structurally sound. There should be no major cracks, loose bricks, or signs of moisture damage. If the brick is flaking, crumbling, or damp, it’s best to repair those issues first.

2. Clean the surface: dust, dirt, or efflorescence (white salt deposits) can prevent proper adhesion. Use a wire brush and masonry cleaner to thoroughly clean the brick. Rinse and let it dry completely before moving on.

3. Use a metal lath and scratch coat: this step ensures a secure bond between the veneer and the brick. Attach metal lath to the brick wall using masonry screws and washers. Apply a scratch coat of mortar over the lath (about ½" thick) and score it with horizontal grooves using a notched trowel. Allow it to cure for 24-48 hours. Note: Some manufactured stone products are designed for "direct application" to clean masonry like brick. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

4. Install the stone veneer: once your scratch coat is cured apply mortar to the back of each stone piece and press it firmly into place. Start from the bottom and work your way up. Use spacers or shims if needed to maintain level rows. Fill gaps with mortar (called "grouting") and smooth it with a joint tool.

5. Seal the stone (optional): depending on the location and exposure to moisture, a breathable masonry sealer can protect your veneer and make cleaning easier, especially on fireplaces or outdoor walls.

When to call a pro

If you're not comfortable working with masonry materials, or your brick wall has structural issues, it may be worth hiring a stone mason or experienced contractor. A professional can ensure proper installation and a flawless finish.
