Does Stone Veneer Fade?
Share
Manufactured stone veneer is a popular choice for homeowners and builders seeking the timeless beauty of natural stone without the high cost and weight. But one common concern that arises is whether manufactured stone veneer will fade over time. In this blog post, we'll delve into the factors that affect the color durability of manufactured stone veneer, and how to ensure your installation remains vibrant for years to come.
Understanding manufactured stone veneer
Manufactured stone veneer is made from a blend of natural aggregates, cement, and iron oxide pigments. This mixture is cast into molds that replicate the look and texture of natural stone. The result is a lightweight, versatile, and cost-effective product that can be used for various applications, from exterior facades to interior accent walls.
Factors that influence fading
While manufactured stone veneer is designed to be durable and long-lasting, certain factors can influence its potential to fade over time. Let's explore these factors in detail:
1. Quality of pigments and materials: The quality of the pigments and materials used in the manufacturing process plays a significant role in the longevity of the stone's color. High-quality iron oxide pigments are known for their resistance to UV radiation and weathering, which helps maintain the stone's color over time. When purchasing manufactured stone veneer, it's crucial to choose a reputable manufacturer that uses high-quality ingredients. Our stone veneer is man-made of Portland cement. Mountain View Stone strictly monitors every step of the production process for quality control. Made with Color Lock Technology, the face color has bonding agents in it to help protect against fading from harsh environmental conditions, cleaners, and even pressure washing (see our installation and maintenance documents for more information).
2. Exposure to sunlight: prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading in many building materials, and manufactured stone veneer is no exception. The UV rays in sunlight can break down the pigments in the stone, leading to a gradual loss of color. However, modern advancements in manufacturing techniques and materials have significantly improved the UV resistance of manufactured stone veneer, reducing the risk of fading. Our stone veneer and brick veneer are manufactured to last. We back it up with our 50 year limited manufacturer's warranty.
3. Weather conditions: extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations, can also impact the color of manufactured stone veneer. Freeze-thaw cycles, in particular, can cause the stone to expand and contract, potentially leading to surface wear and color changes. To mitigate these effects, ensure proper installation and use a high-quality sealer to protect the stone from moisture penetration (see our installation and maintenance documents for more information).
4. Maintenance practices: regular maintenance can help preserve the appearance of manufactured stone veneer. Cleaning the stone periodically to remove dirt, algae, and other contaminants will prevent surface buildup that can cause discoloration (see our installation and maintenance documents for more information).
How to minimize fading
While some degree of fading is inevitable over time, there are several steps you can take to minimize and delay the process:
1. Choose high-quality products: investing in high-quality manufactured stone veneer from reputable manufacturers is the first step in ensuring long-lasting color. Look for products that are specifically formulated for UV resistance and weather durability.
2. Proper installation: proper installation is crucial for the longevity of manufactured stone veneer. Ensure that the stone is installed according to the manufacturer's guidelines, including the use of a water-resistant barrier and proper mortar application. This will help prevent moisture infiltration and reduce the risk of damage and fading.
3. Use a sealer: applying a stone sealer can provide an additional layer of protection against UV rays, moisture, and contaminants. Sealers can help maintain the stone's color and extend its lifespan. Be sure to choose a sealer that is compatible with manufactured stone veneer and reapply it as recommended by the manufacturer. A concrete sealer is not required, however, sealing with a concrete sealer will add protection especially over the mortar joints. Please keep in mind that different concrete sealers will affect the appearance of the stone veneer. A matte (or flat) finish will have little to know impact to the finished look of the stone veneer whereas a gloss finish will darken the stone veneer and have a wet look. We recommend testing your concrete sealer on a piece of stone veneer that has not been installed to ensure you are happy with the finished appearance after applying concrete sealer.
4. Regular maintenance: regular cleaning and maintenance can go a long way in preserving the appearance of manufactured stone veneer. Use a mild detergent and a soft brush to clean the stone, and avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers that could damage the surface.
