Best Adhesive for Installing Stone Veneer
Share
When it comes to installing stone veneer, choosing the right adhesive is critical for ensuring a long-lasting, durable bond between the stone and the substrate. Among the various options available, construction adhesive, thinset, Type N mortar, or polymer-modified products, Type S mortar stands out as the preferred choice by masons and manufacturers alike. In this post, we’ll explore why Type S mortar is the go-to option and why it consistently outperforms other adhesives for stone veneer applications.
What is Type S mortar?
Type S mortar is a cement-based mortar mix that typically contains portland cement, hydrated lime, and sand, formulated to provide high bond strength and flexibility. It’s most commonly used in applications that require enhanced durability, such as load-bearing walls, foundations, and exterior facades.
Key advantages of Type S mortar for stone veneer installation
1. Superior bond strength: Type S mortar offers a minimum compressive strength of 1,800 psi, making it stronger than Type N (750 psi) and Type O (350 psi). This makes it ideal for vertical installations where gravity and weather elements can weaken inferior adhesives over time. The strong bond prevents stone slippage and ensures your veneer stays securely in place for decades.
2. Resistance to freeze-thaw cycles: manufactured stone is often installed on exterior walls, columns, fireplaces, and outdoor kitchens. Type S mortar has excellent weather resistance and can handle freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or losing adhesion, especially when properly installed over a water-resistant barrier and lath system.
3. Workability for vertical applications: unlike thinset or general-purpose adhesives, Type S mortar has the right consistency and open time needed for vertical stone veneer installations. It allows the installer to position and adjust stones as needed, ensuring better alignment and a natural-looking finish.
4. Manufacturer recommendations: most leading manufactured stone veneer manufacturers explicitly recommend Type S mortar for installation. Using an unapproved adhesive like construction glue or mastic can void your warranty, compromise performance, and lead to costly repairs later on.
5. Long-term durability: over time, adhesives can break down due to UV exposure, moisture, or thermal expansion. Type S mortar, however, is engineered for longevity and performs well in both residential and commercial settings, indoors and outdoors.
What about thinset or construction adhesive?
While thinset mortars may be acceptable for tile installations, they lack the compressive strength and flexibility required for stone veneer, especially on vertical or load-bearing surfaces. Similarly, construction adhesives may offer quick bonding but don’t provide the long-term structural integrity that cement-based mortars do. They’re also unsuitable for exterior use or high-heat areas like fireplaces or BBQ surrounds.
How to use Type S mortar correctly
To get the best results:
Mix Type S mortar to a thick, creamy peanut butter consistency.
Apply a scratch coat to your substrate and let it cure.
Back-butter each stone for maximum contact.
Press firmly and "wiggle" the stone into place.
Tool joints and clean excess mortar promptly for a professional finish.
